Investigations have begun into the soaring prices and alleged irregularities surrounding tickets for the FIFA World Cup 2026. According to reports, the rapid escalation in ticket prices and the controversial sales process have fueled significant fan dissatisfaction, with many spectators alleging they were coerced into selecting ticket options that were not of their choice.
As per an AP report, FIFA’s ticketing policy is back under scrutiny. The Attorneys General of New York and New Jersey have issued a joint statement announcing an investigation into whether FIFA’s ticket sales process violated consumer protection laws. It is pertinent to note that these two states are scheduled to host eight critical World Cup 2026 matches, including the final.
Authorities have summoned FIFA, requesting numerous documents and information related to the ticket allocation system. A major focal point of the investigation is FIFA’s “dynamic pricing” policy, which caused ticket prices for multiple matches to skyrocket unexpectedly. Additionally, modifications to stadium seating plans, resulting in spectators being seated away from their designated spots and further afield, are also under investigation.
Prosecutors from New York and New Jersey, in collaboration with New York City’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, have initiated an in-depth probe. The current focus is specifically on ticket sales for matches at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which is slated to host the final.
New York Attorney General Letitia James commented strongly on the issue, stating that New Yorkers have long anticipated hosting the World Cup and deserve access to tickets at fair prices. She emphasized that no fan should be forced to pay arbitrary prices for seats and that buyers should receive the exact seats displayed at the time of purchase.
Meanwhile, New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport characterized FIFA’s ticketing system as a “trap of chaos, artificial scarcity, and excessive pricing.” While hosting the World Cup is a matter of pride, she asserted it cannot be used to exploit ordinary citizens and spectators.
On the other hand, FIFA has not yet offered any official response regarding the investigation. The organization’s silence has further intensified the controversy.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will commence on June 11 with opening matches in Mexico City and Guadalajara. Subsequently, on June 13, the first match at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, boasting a capacity of approximately 82,000, will feature Brazil versus Morocco.
The final is scheduled for July 19 at the same stadium, where ticket prices are currently fueling heavy debate, with some tickets reaching approximately $33,000.
In the midst of this, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a special lottery scheme offering 1,000 tickets to city residents. Around 150 tickets for each match (excluding the final) will be distributed at a price of just $50, offering hope for relief to local fans.
Furthermore, FIFA has already released a limited number of tickets
