Trump Faces Two Difficult Options
Even though Trump is claiming victory, according to a BBC News analysis, he is now trapped in a ‘Chakravyuh’ (a complex web/labyrinth). He has only two paths left to emerge from it:
Escalating the War: According to the BBC report, Trump currently faces two choices. The first path is to intensify military attacks. However, the major risk here is that Iran-backed groups could launch attacks across the entire region. This could lead to the closure of maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz, causing global oil prices to skyrocket and delivering a massive shock to the global economy.
Declaring Victory Without Total Success: The BBC analysis suggests the second option is for Trump to portray minor achievements as a major victory and retreat. But this poses a threat to his credibility. If the reality on the ground differs from Trump’s claims, it could lead to international embarrassment. Experts believe that starting a war is easy, but ending one is the most difficult task.
Plan to Occupy Kharg Island
In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump signaled that the U.S. might seize Iran’s primary oil hub, ‘Kharg Island.’ He stated that he has many options and intends to control Iranian oil. Comparing the situation to Venezuela, Trump mentioned that the U.S. could stay there indefinitely. Trump also claimed that Iran has sent 20 oil tankers to the U.S. as a sign of “respect” and is agreeing to the U.S.’s 15-point peace plan.
On the other hand, US Central Command (CENTCOM) shared on the social media platform ‘X’ that on March 27, the USS Tripoli (LHA-7) reached the West Asia front. This warship entered the combat zone with approximately 3,500 sailors and Marine commandos. These Marine commandos are specifically trained to rescue hijacked ships at sea and engage in direct military confrontations.
Iran’s Counter-Strike: ‘Negotiations are Just a Show’
Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaking via ‘Press TV,’ alleged that the U.S. and Israel are using the pretext of negotiations to plan a ground assault. He stated that Iran will not bow to pressure and its military is ready for a confrontation. Additionally, Iran’s Acting Defense Minister, Brigadier General Sayyid Majid Ibn-Raza, spoke with the Turkish Defense Minister, calling the attack a violation of international law.
Report by The Guardian
According to The Guardian, wars often take paths that leaders do not expect. Given Iran’s institutional strength and regional influence, it does not seem possible to eliminate it so easily. The impact of this war will also be felt by countries like India, which depend on Gulf nations for oil. It remains to be seen what steps Trump takes to navigate out of this difficult situation.
