The situation between the US and Venezuela is set to escalate in the next few days. In fact, US President Donald Trump has begun preparations to oust Venezuelan President Maduro from power. It is reported that the Trump administration has granted the CIA intelligence agency permission to conduct covert operations in Venezuela.
This could include lethal missions, meaning Maduro’s life could be directly threatened. The purpose of this entire mission is to accelerate efforts to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Citing the New York Times, US officials say this is a classified directive, which expands the CIA’s authority in the Caribbean region.
Military Power and Reconnaissance
According to TWZ, Flightradar24 spotted three US B-52 bombers in the Caribbean heading toward Venezuela. This was interpreted as a US reconnaissance. Additionally, the number of US troops in the region has been significantly increased. When reporters asked if the CIA had the authority to fix Maduro, Trump joked, “Should I answer that? That’s a stupid question.”
CIA Granted More Power
Under the new directive, the CIA has broad authority to conduct covert operations in Venezuela and surrounding areas. This could include paramilitary operations and targeting drug traffickers. If combined with a larger military strategy, action could also be taken against elements of the Venezuelan government. However, it is unclear whether the CIA is currently conducting an active mission under this new directive or whether it is merely a contingency plan.
US Increases Military Strength
The US has amassed a significant military presence in the Caribbean. Thousands of troops are deployed there, including forces in Puerto Rico, Marines on amphibious ships, and several F-35B jets. Multinational military exercises involving the US and other countries are also underway. US officials say airstrikes have been carried out on boats used for drug trafficking, killing approximately 24 people. The White House says this is part of efforts to disrupt drug supplies and put pressure on Maduro.
