The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to make history as it is set to appoint a woman leader as its national president for the first time. Since 2020, the party’s top leadership has been led by J.P. Nadda, whose term was extended until the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Now that the elections are over, the party is in the final stages of selecting a new president. There is strong talk of a female leadership position this time, which could mark a new chapter for the BJP.
According to sources, three prominent women leaders – Nirmala Sitharaman, Daggubati Purandeswari, and Vanathi Srinivasan – are leading the race. Current Finance Minister and former Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is considered the strongest candidate. Her political influence is crucial for the party’s expansion, especially in South India. Former Union Minister from Andhra Pradesh, Daggubati Purandeswari, is also in the news for her political experience and leadership skills. Tamil Nadu MLA Vanathi Srinivasan, who has also served as the national president of the party’s women’s wing, is among the contenders for the post.
This initiative by the BJP is being undertaken in light of the growing support from women voters. In states like Maharashtra, Haryana, and Delhi, women voters have clearly shown a shift towards the party. Following the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in 2023, the party has also expressed its commitment to women. The selection of a woman president will not only be a political strategy but also a social message.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has also approved the idea, which is being seen as an important signal in this direction. The BJP now wants to make women’s leadership a part of its future roadmap, which could open doors to new political opportunities for the party.
The BJP was founded in 1980, and since then, many prominent leaders have held the position of party president, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, K.L. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, and Amit Shah. Now, for the first time in the party’s history, the possibility of a woman becoming national president has created a wave of excitement in political circles.
