The Emotional Plea of the 19-Year-Old Gajapati Maharaja
……………………………………………………………….
When all efforts failed and Lord Jagannath did not ascend the Nandighosa chariot in any way, the chief administrators of the temple prayed to the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri for help. At that time, the 19-year-old Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb reached the chariot from the Srimandir barefoot. There, he did not act like a ruler, but surrendered himself before the Lord like a humble devotee. It is said that he touched the feet of Lord Jagannath, pressed his body against the Lord’s idol, and, while being emotional, begged for forgiveness while saying “Bho Prabhu” and prayed for Him to ascend the chariot to give darshan to the devotees.

According to local beliefs, the immediate effect of the Gajapati Maharaja’s sincere devotion, surrender, and humble prayer was seen. The idol, which felt extremely heavy to the servitors only a few moments ago, suddenly became so light that the Daitapati servitors were able to successfully seat Lord Jagannath on the Nandighosa chariot without any difficulty. As soon as the Lord was seated on the chariot, the entire city of Puri echoed with the chants of “Jai Jagannath,” and thousands of devotees witnessed this scene. Even today, devotees consider this incident a symbol of the Lord’s divine leela and the power of true devotion.
