Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a new and significant gamble to end the ongoing war with Russia. Zelenskyy has written an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, proposing a direct, face-to-face meeting. In this long letter of over 1,800 words, the Ukrainian President stated that he is fully prepared for a ‘total ceasefire’ during the proposed talks.
Reacting to this diplomatic development, US President Donald Trump has also taken a positive stance. Trump said at the White House on Thursday that if both leaders meet face-to-face to end the war, it would be excellent.

America’s focus is on Iran, we cannot just wait: Zelenskyy
……………………………………………………………
In his letter, President Zelenskyy publicly acknowledged that America’s full attention is currently focused entirely on the issue of Iran. He wrote, “It would be completely wrong to think that we should just keep waiting until this war going on in Europe once again becomes the center of America’s attention.” Peace is only possible through direct engagement between Ukraine and Russia.
The tone of the letter was also quite aggressive and satirical, drawing attention to the missile and drone attacks carried out by Ukraine on Russian territory in recent days. Targeting Putin, Zelenskyy even wrote, “After being in power for 26 years, age has started to show its effect on Putin.”
Referring to the Russian public, Zelenskyy said that the Russian people are also completely tired of Ukrainian drone attacks, fuel shortages, rising prices, and this endless war. Urging Putin, he wrote, “Do not be afraid to choose a way out of this war. This is the main expectation from you at this time.”

Putin’s response – “Zelenskyy can meet in Moscow at any time”
…………………………………………………………..
The Kremlin has confirmed that they have received Zelenskyy’s letter and Putin will soon be fully briefed on it. However, speaking to foreign journalists in St. Petersburg, Vladimir Putin said that he is certainly ready and willing to reach a compromise with Ukraine, but for this, Ukraine will also have to make compromises.
Taking a jab, Putin also said that since Trump is busy with the Iran matter, the European Union (EU) should convince Zelenskyy to leave his territory.
The Kremlin stated on Zelenskyy’s proposal that the Ukrainian leader can come to Moscow to meet Putin at any time. However, Zelenskyy had already made it clear in his letter that he would not go to Moscow for the meeting. On the question of sitting at the negotiating table, Putin made a major statement, saying, “If we sit at the negotiating table, I will say to Zelenskyy—thank God it is all over.”
Russia adamant on keeping land, Ukraine not ready to bow down
………………………………………………………..
Amid these potential talks, the biggest obstacle remains the long-standing conditions of both countries. Putin’s stance on this matter remains extremely strict. Russia’s old condition is that Ukraine must completely withdraw its troops from the four regions partially occupied by Russia—Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia—and abandon its intention to join NATO.
On the other hand, Ukraine has clearly refused to hand over its land to Russia at any cost. Ukraine believes that giving up land will further boost Russia’s morale and it may attack again in the future, just as it did by launching a full-scale war in 2022, eight years after its illegal occupation of Crimea in 2014.
It is worth noting that ceasefire talks between the two countries have been completely stalled for the last few months. Previous peace talks held in Geneva, Abu Dhabi, and Istanbul have also proven to be complete failures. In such a situation, the whole world is watching to see how much life this open letter from Zelenskyy can breathe into this cold peace process.
Analysis
……………….
From a pragmatic perspective, an immediate ceasefire resulting from this exchange is highly unlikely. Here is the brief analysis –
Conflict of Interest – For Russia, this war is not merely a territorial dispute but a matter of maintaining its geopolitical influence. Conversely, for Ukraine, it is a fight for its very survival. As long as both sides remain unwilling to compromise on their core demands, finding a middle ground remains extremely difficult.
Climate of Distrust – Following the failure of previous negotiations in Geneva and Istanbul, mutual trust between the two nations has been completely eroded. A single letter is insufficient to bridge such a deep-seated deficit of confidence.
Diplomatic Maneuvering – This letter is being viewed more as a “diplomatic tactic” than a sincere peace initiative. Zelenskyy aims to maintain international support through this gesture, while Putin seeks to project himself as peace-oriented to alleviate global sanctions.
Conclusion – Since both nations remain entrenched in their original positions, the war is far more likely to continue than to see an immediate ceasefire. In the current scenario, any significant change is improbable without robust third-party intervention or overwhelming economic pressure.
