Google, the world’s largest search engine, will set up its own nuclear plant. For this, the company has chosen the US state of Tennessee. Google will build a plant in Tennessee to meet the electricity needs of its data centers. The plant will be operational by 2030.
In this, the US nuclear energy company ‘Kairos Power’ will support Google. Both the companies have established a partnership for this.
Google is currently focusing on technologies such as ‘Generative Artificial Intelligence’. Due to this, the electricity requirement has increased manifold due to the pressure on data centers. Due to this, the electricity demand in America has increased. Therefore, Google has announced the establishment of a dedicated nuclear reactor to meet its needs. The plant will be able to generate up to 500 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 35 million homes. It will be built by California-based nuclear power company Kairos.
The first phase will see the construction of a 50-megawatt small modular nuclear power plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. A long-term power purchase agreement will be signed with the Tennessee Valley Authority to power Google’s data centers. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said that advanced nuclear reactors are essential for the country’s AI-powered leadership. The administration has identified the necessary land for this. As a next step, the Energy Department is working with Kairos Power to provide technical, operational and regulatory support. There are currently no commercially available advanced nuclear power plants in the US.
