Amidst the whispers of war in the Middle East, a major piece of news is emerging. US President Donald Trump, in a shocking move, has announced the withdrawal of the naval blockade from the Strait of Hormuz. Just 48 hours ago, Trump had implemented a strict military siege on this strategic waterway, which has now been completely terminated. This decision by Trump has not only surprised the world but is also being viewed as a major ‘U-turn.’
On Monday, April 13, America had deployed nearly 10,000 troops to block this vital maritime route. However, Trump has now made it clear that this waterway will remain fully open for the merchant ships of all nations.
Letter to Xi Jinping and the ‘Special’ Deal with China
The primary reason behind this sudden shift is believed to be a diplomatic agreement with China. President Trump himself confirmed on social media that he had discussions with the Chinese government. According to Trump, China has provided an assurance that it will not supply weapons of any kind to Iran.
Trump stated that he had written a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding this issue, to which Beijing has agreed. Trump expressed hope that during his upcoming visit to China, Jinping would give him a grand welcome, as relations between the two leaders now appear to be significantly improving.
Why Did America’s Military Blockade Fail?
Beyond diplomacy, ground realities were also a major factor behind Trump’s decision. According to a report by the ‘Wall Street Journal,’ America’s blockade collapsed on the very first day. It is reported that despite the heavy deployment of US troops, about 20 ships managed to bypass them and exit through Hormuz. Most of these ships belonged to China. Stopping these ships would have been an invitation to direct war for America, as China had already issued a stern warning regarding this.
Trump faced opposition on this issue not only from China but also from his oldest allies, namely Britain and France. France stated in strong words that countries engaged in war cannot shut down the global economy at their whim. These two European nations were preparing to bypass the US and form a separate international coalition to keep Hormuz open, which began to raise questions about America’s international credibility.
Eyes on the ‘Peace Talks’ in Islamabad
Another strategic reason for lifting the blockade is considered to be the ‘Peace Deal Meeting’ scheduled to take place this week in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Ahead of this high-profile proposed meeting between America and Iran, Trump did not want to weaken his position. Experts believe that if the blockade continued to fail, America’s hand would have been weakened at the negotiating table. By removing the blockade now, Trump has attempted to create a positive atmosphere for talks with Iran.
