Amidst the war with Iran, America is now withdrawing Patriot missile defense systems from Europe and deploying them to West Asia. Following the removal of these systems, Europe appears to be standing alone against Russia. It is being suggested that while America is leaving its friends isolated due to the conflict with Iran, its rivals are gaining strength.
Perhaps America had not anticipated before entering the war with Iran that it would sustain deep injuries and the conflict would drag on. However, America now appears surrounded on several fronts. Its most advanced weapons are being destroyed, and the friends it stood by for years are now feeling abandoned. To protect itself in the West Asian war, America is reclaiming defense systems deployed with its allies, while its arch-rival Russia continues to grow stronger and China’s power is also increasing. The question remains: will this war become a “noose around the neck” for America, trapping it on multiple fronts simultaneously?
Russia’s Enmity and Europe’s Security
Since the 15th century, Russia has been perceived as a barbaric threat in Western Europe, and this enmity has only grown over time. During the Cold War, Europe stood with America, and tensions with Russia continued thereafter. Most NATO members are from Europe. To defeat Russia, America deployed its best weapons and established command centers across Europe.
After the Ukraine war, Europe imposed various sanctions on Russia, bringing enmity to a peak. Now, America seems to be leaving Europe alone. Following Russia’s aggressive stance, America had equipped 19 countries, including Germany and Greece, with Patriot missile systems. Deployment increased after the Ukraine war as Russia began threatening European nations. However, reports now suggest America is bringing these Patriot missiles back to strengthen its defense in the war with Iran, as Iranian missiles are consistently targeting these defense systems, and America and its Gulf allies are proving unable to stop them.
What is the Patriot Missile Defense System?
The Patriot Missile Defense System is a sophisticated missile defense network used to destroy enemy missiles, drones, and fighter jets mid-air. Developed primarily by the U.S., it is considered one of the world’s most reliable air defense systems. It operates through a network of powerful radars, control stations, and missile launchers. When an enemy threat approaches, the radar detects it from a distance, the control system assesses the threat, and an interceptor missile is launched to neutralize the target in the air. Its greatest strength is the minimal time required for this entire process.
Is Europe Defenseless Against Russia?
Amid the ongoing war with Iran, America has moved a large number of its Patriot systems from Europe to West Asia. U.S. defense officials told the Associated Press that this move could create a concerning void in Europe’s air defense against potential Russian threats. According to the Turkish Defense Ministry and U.S. officials, several ballistic missiles were fired from Iran towards Turkey after the war began. Consequently, two Patriot systems were sent from Germany to Turkey. Officials mentioned that missile stocks for these systems are “actually depleting” and the situation is becoming “quite concerning.” Although the White House, via Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, dismissed these concerns, stating that President Donald Trump’s “Operation Epic Fury” has sufficient resources, other officials remain wary.
Russia Strengthening Due to Iran War
Before the Iran war, Russia’s power was declining due to its four-year involvement in Ukraine—facing pressure for agreements, oil sanctions, and Ukraine receiving Western weapons. However, the U.S. and Israel’s attack on Iran changed the dynamic. In retaliation, Iran attacked Israel and Gulf nations allied with the U.S. This disrupted oil and gas supplies from the Gulf, causing the sanctions on Russian oil to loosen. Now, neither America nor Europe is focusing on Ukraine, and Europe feels vulnerable to Russian missiles. Thus, while it remains to be seen what America gains from the Iran war, it is clear that America and its allies are weakening while their enemies grow stronger.
