If Prime Minister Narendra Modi steps down in 2029, who would the people of the country want to see as the next Prime Minister? A recent survey conducted by UPUK to answer this question has yielded surprising results. The survey was conducted between July 1 and August 14, 2025, and a large number of people from across the country gave their opinions.
Who after Modi? Three names were asked in the survey:
Yogi Adityanath
Amit Shah
Nitin Gadkari
People were asked who they would like to see as Narendra Modi’s successor if he ceases to be Prime Minister after 2029. The results surprised even political analysts.
84% of people’s first choice is Yogi Adityanath
The answer to this question was very clear. 84 percent of respondents saw UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as Modi’s natural successor.
With his strong administrative approach, swift decisions, and staunch Hindutva image—Yogi is being seen as Modi’s closest political “projection.”
People believe that Yogi can provide the strong leadership that the country will need in the post-Modi era.
12% chose Amit Shah
Home Minister Amit Shah, often considered Modi’s closest and strategic ally, came in second in the race.
12% believe that Amit Shah has the strategic skills and organizational acumen necessary for the highest office in the country.
However, this figure is significantly lower than that of Yogi, indicating that the public sees more of Modi’s charisma in Yogi.
Gadkari Ranks Third
Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, known as a clean and development-focused leader, garnered only 4 percent support in the survey.
While the public has a positive opinion of Gadkari’s work style, he did not receive widespread public support for the post of Prime Minister.
Modi’s Magic Still Persists
The most interesting aspect is that 52% of people believe that Modi should remain Prime Minister even after 2029.
That is, despite opinions on Modi’s successor, more than half of the country still want Modi to lead the country.
What Does This Data Say?
The leadership debate within the BJP is slowly coming to the surface. The support for Yogi Adityanath indicates that the public prefers a strong, Hindutva-based, and decisive leadership even after 2029. While names like Amit Shah and Gadkari may be influential, their image in the public consciousness does not appear to be strong enough to succeed Modi.
