The AI Impact Summit 2026 held in Delhi has raised questions about the potential of India’s AI revolution. Will India remain merely a consumer, or will it emerge as a major player in AI? In this article, we analyze India’s historical contributions, current status, and future prospects. Know whether Indian companies can develop AI platforms or if they will remain merely as vendors for American companies.
Will India be a Major Player in the AI Revolution?
Will the AI Impact Summit 2026 organized in Delhi establish a strong foundation for the AI revolution in India, or will it move to the sidelines like other industrial and communication revolutions? This question arises because India’s historical contribution to these revolutions has remained limited. In the first industrial revolution, India neither made any significant discoveries nor any manufacturing.
India’s Contribution
In the communication revolution as well, India emerged only as a consumer. India has used every new technology, but its own contribution has remained negligible. For example, in the social media revolution, India has 450 million Facebook users, whereas in the AI revolution, India has 145 million ChatGPT users, which is in second place after the USA.
Competition Among AI Companies
Competition is growing among global AI companies regarding where they will get more users. Google held a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to increase the users of its Gemini and announced that they would provide AI training to 20 million employees in India. Similarly, Open AI and Microsoft have also announced training programs.
Status of Indian Companies
Although the Indian company Sarvam AI has launched its platform at the AI Impact Summit, its use among the general public has not happened yet. On the other hand, platforms of American companies are being used by millions of people. America and China are investing heavily in AI, while the Indian government has made a provision of only 1,000 crore rupees this year.
Future Prospects
Indian billionaires have announced investments of lakhs of crores of rupees in AI, but can these companies develop any AI platform? Looking at history, it does not appear that these companies will create something new. They will work as vendors for American companies and create sector-specific applications in India.
Data Centers and Investment
The investment of Indian companies will mainly be in land acquisition and the establishment of data centers. The government has announced a tax exemption for data centers for up to 21 years, which will benefit the companies. Data capacity in India is expected to increase to 5 gigawatts in the next four years.
Final Thoughts
When India had not manufactured hardware in any revolution, what can be expected in software? India does not manufacture a powerful computer or smartphone. Therefore, the possibility of India developing any AI platform is low. India will remain a consumer as always and will use AI.
