The recent cyberattack on Tata Motors-owned luxury car company Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is considered the UK’s most damaging cyber incident to date. The attack cost the UK economy approximately £1.9 billion and affected more than 5,000 businesses. The Cyber Monitoring Centre (CMC), an independent assessment of cyber incidents in the UK, described the JLR cyberattack as a Class III systemic incident. The CMC evaluates cyberattacks on a five-point scale.
Production halted in September
The CMC says the attack caused significant disruption to JLR’s manufacturing, supply chain, and distribution network. The attack on Jaguar Land Rover’s production plant occurred in late August, and production was halted throughout September. JLR, while not directly responding to CMC’s claim, stated that it was restoring operations in a phased manner.
How Much Was the Damage?
CMC said in a statement that its assessment model estimates that the attack has caused JLR losses of between 1.6 billion and 2.1 billion pounds. However, if there are significant delays in resuming production or if the attack has a significant impact on the technical system, this loss could increase further. Furthermore, the attack has impacted the company’s employees and component suppliers.
This could be the impact:
Many suppliers have taken steps such as salary reductions, reduced working hours, and furloughed employees. CMC has expressed concern that these actions could also have psychological and social impacts. It said that this analysis highlights the impact of cyberattacks on society and the economy, in addition to financial losses.
