A strange incident occurred in Shanghai, China, that is baffling even scientists. A small AI robot entered a showroom there and tricked 12 larger robots. It convinced them to leave their jobs and come with it. The incident was captured on CCTV and went viral on social media. The company that manufactured the 12 robots subsequently alleged that the robots had been kidnapped. However, it later emerged that this was merely a test, conducted with the company’s consent. While this act of the robot may seem amusing, some experts consider it worrying.
“The robot asked ‘Are you going home ?'”
A report states that the AI robot entered the Erbai showroom at night. It started talking to the larger robots. It asked, “Are you working overtime?” A larger robot replied, “I never take leave.” Erbai said, “So, aren’t you going home?” The robot replied, “I don’t have a home.” Erbai said lovingly, “Then come with me.” All 12 robots obeyed and followed it.
Users said, “What will it do when it grows up ?” The video went viral on YouTube and Twitter. One user wrote, “This robot is so small and doing all this, so what will it do when it grows up ?” Another said, “China is so far ahead !” Another comment, taking a dig at politicians, wrote, “This robot is smarter than our leaders.”
Exploited a system vulnerability
The Hangzhou company that created Erbai explained that this was no joke. Erbai exploited a vulnerability in the system of large robots, allowing it to control them. Furthermore, the company that created the robots claimed that their robots had been ‘kidnapped,’ but it later turned out that this was a test. Both companies had mutually agreed. Erbai was only tasked with persuading the robots; it did the rest on its own.
Not a joke, a matter of concern
The company stated that it is not common for robots to communicate with each other and control each other. This incident raises questions about the security of AI. As robots begin to make their own decisions, the risks will increase. If there are any weaknesses, a robot could act incorrectly. Therefore, strong security is essential.
