This article was published in the US-published journal “Judgment and Decision Making.” It included 1,682 adults. All these participants were made to read six short stories. Among them, six were human-authored and six were written by ChatGPT. The theme of all AI copies was identical to the human-authored stories.

According to the study, participants were not told who wrote which article. In the evaluation, content prepared by AI scored higher on parameters of language clarity, structure, and objectivity.

However, researchers clarified in their conclusion that this does not mean AI is ready to replace novel writers. The study stated that tasks such as gathering story facts, fact-checking, obtaining information from sources, and establishing accountability still remain vital roles for humans.

Dr. Deena Skolnick Weisberg, a senior research fellow at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, said, “AI systems can already create short stories that are considered just as good as stories written by humans. We must update our perspectives on AI capabilities accordingly.”
