What is the International Court of Justice?
The International Court of Justice, located in The Hague, Netherlands, is a global court. It was established in 2002. The ICC is recognized by 124 countries. This court has the authority to prosecute any leader, individual, or institution in the world for serious crimes. Despite the arrest warrant issued against him in March 2023, there is little chance of other countries arresting him.
Russia and Ukraine are not members of the ICC. Regarding the warrant, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia, like other countries, does not recognize the ICC’s authority. Legally, the court’s order holds no significance for Russia.
India is not a party to the ICC
Like Russia, India is not a party to the ICC. New Delhi has not signed its main agreement. Therefore, India is not bound by its terms. India has previously hosted leaders facing ICC proceedings, for example, Sudan’s then-President Omar Hassan al-Bashir visited India in 2015.
